ESP is an acronym for Extra Sensory Perception. As the phrase denotes, the perception is extra sensory, meaning thereby, it cannot take place through the use of our normal five senses. The extra sense may also be called intuition, third eye, sixth sense, hunch, clairvoyance, clairaudience or clairsentience. In short, it is the special power that distinguishes a psychic from an ordinary person in perceiving the truth from falsehood.

The term ESP was originally coined by a German psychic researcher Rudolf Tischner and it was later on taken up by Professor J.B Rhine of the Duke University in the US in 1927. He used card games to prove the existence of the extra sensory perception. A person was asked to hold a card and another one sitting in another room was asked to guess it.  While some people are born with the powers of extra sensory perception, others develop it through study and meditation.
